Festival organizers decided on the title Woodstock because it was where folksinger Bob Dylan and many other musicians lived in New York. It was an artists retreat since the turn of the century. People came from all around, some for the music, some for atmosphere and some just to be there. I liked meeting and forming a united group. All of us were committed to making this presentation the best it could be. The toughest part of our script was finding actual commentary from Woodstock. At first, we thought finding quotes from Woodstock would be hard, but then Shawna found a message board where people shared their experiences from the festival. I found a website that had quotes from some of Janiss interviews which worked into the script perfectly. I really liked the openness we shared and the choosing of our characters. It was hard for us to meet as much as we wanted due to our varying schedules, but we managed through phone calls and late night meetings. In the beginning, a few of the group members did not adhere to the seriousness of our performance and making it the best we could. After a few missed meetings, they calmed down and began working and providing great ideas. I would have to say that the late night meetings were the worst part. Each of us had great ideas for the performance. I would say if I had to do something differently, I would choose to have scheduled meetings that all of us could stick to. I realize people have to work, but accommodations should be made. In addition, I would have the script as the first thing done instead of waiting until a week before it was finished. Overall, though, I felt this was a great learning experience for me. If you exceed the word limit in a noticeable way, the admissions counselor may just stop reading your essay past that point. This is not good for you. Following directions is actually a very important part of the college application process. You need to follow directions to get your letters of recommendation, upload your essays, send supplemental materials, get your test scores sent, and so on and so forth. So it’s just a good general rule to follow whatever instructions you’ve been given by the institution. Better safe than sorry! Can I Go Under the Word Limit? If you can truly get your point across well beneath the word limit, it’s probably fine. Brevity is not necessarily a bad thing in writing just so long as you are clear, cogent, and communicate what you want to. However, most college essays have pretty tight word limits anyways. So if you’re writing 300 words for an essay with a 500-word essayask yourself: is there anything more you could say to elaborate on or support your points? Consult with a parent, friend, or teacher on where you could elaborate with more detail or expand your points. Also, if the college gives you a word range, you absolutely need to at least hit the bottom end of the range. So if you get a range from the institution like 400-500 words, you need to write at least 400 words. If you write less, it will come across like you have nothing to say, which is obviously not an impression you want to give. Don't let this sinister hand stop you from writing everything you have to say! What If There Is No Word Limit? Some colleges don’t give you a word limit for one or more of your essay prompts. This can be a little stressful, but the prompts generally fall into a few categories: Writing Sample Some colleges don’t provide a hard-and-fast word limit because they want a writing sample from one of your classes. In this case, a word limit would be very limiting to you in terms of which assignments you could select from. For an example of this kind of prompt, check out essay Option B at Amherst: â€Å"Submit a graded paper from your junior or senior year that best represents your writing skills and analytical abilities. We are particularly interested in your ability to construct a tightly reasoned, persuasive argument that calls upon literary, sociological or historical evidence. You should NOT submit a laboratory report, journal entry, creative writing sample or in-class essay.† While there is usually no word limit per se, colleges sometimes provide a general page guideline for a writing samples. In the FAQ for Option B, Amherst clarifies, â€Å"There is no hard-and-fast rule for official page limit. Typically, we anticipate a paper of 4-5 pages will provide adequate length to demonstrate your analytical abilities. Implicit Length Guideline Sometimes, while there’s no word (or even page) limit, there’s still an implicit length guideline. What do I mean by this? See, for example, this Wellesley supplemental essay prompt: â€Å"The required Wellesley ‘Writing Supplement,’ asks you to respond to the following topic in two well-developed paragraphs. When choosing a college community, you are choosing a place where you believe that you can live, learn, and flourish. We know that there are more than 100 reasons to choose Wellesley, but the ‘Wellesley 100’ is a good place to start. Visit the Wellesley 100 (www.wellesley.edu/admission/100) and let us know, in two well-developed paragraphs, which two items most attract, inspire, or energize you and why.† There’s no page or word limit here, but it does say to respond â€Å"in two well-developed paragraphs.† This gives you an idea of what’s reasonable. â€Å"Well-developed† certainly means the paragraphs can be long, but even two long paragraphs shouldn’t exceed 500 words or so.That’s what I mean by an â€Å"implicit† word limit- there is a reasonable length you could go to within the boundaries of the prompt. But what's the proper coffee-to-paragraph ratio? Treasure Hunt There is also the classic â€Å"treasure hunt† prompt. No, it’s not a prompt about a treasure hunt. It’s a prompt where there are no length guidelines given, but if you hunt around on the rest of the website you can find length guidelines. For example, the University of Chicago provides six â€Å"Extended Essay† prompts. They are required, and you must choose one, but nowhere on the page is there any guidance about word count or page limit. However, some googling about UChicago essay prompts led me to a post about the essays on the UChicago admissions blog. That post says at the end, â€Å"We ask simply that your essay is somewhere in the realm of 500-650 words, or about 1-2 pages single or double spaced (and we’re flexible- don’t take this as license to write a 14-page tome, but know that we won’t stop reading at 651 words if you need an extra verb).† So there you go! You want to be (loosely) in the realm of 500-650 words. Help! There Really Is No Guidance on Length If you really can’t find any length guidelines anywhere on the admissions website and you’re at a loss, I advise calling the admissions office. If we look deeper to seek the causes for the liquidity ratio declines, it is simply the management wanted to take full advantage of this opportunity, as Google decided to invest aggressively and heavily to achieve rapid innovations in its search technologies. It also made big investments to make notable enhancements to search including Instant Previews, Google Instant and Place search. During 2010, Google invested $1.8 billion to acquire products, services, companies and technologies. As a result of these huge investments made in 2010, Google liquidity ratios have a big drop, as well as its free cash flow. But this doesnt mean its competitive situation is weakened, on the opposite, these investments may have opened the doors for large amounts of future profits for Google Inc. and its stockholders. From 2010 to 2012, its current ratios and free cash flow have an overall increasing trend but are much lower than 2009 numbers. DSO normally represents the average number of days it takes for a company to collect outstanding receivables. The increasing DSO of Google indicates that there is a bigger amount of customers owing payments on its sales; this will make Google unable to collect cash on its sales in time, also expose the risk of ending up with bad debts. It would also limit the companys ability to make reinvestment due to lack of cash. Moreover, DSO is a component of the Cash Conversion Cycle (CCC), which is usually used to determine how long cash is tied up in working capital. Thus, a big DSO contribute to make a larger CCC, it will also deteriorate Googles growth and its value in the long run. While the reason that longer DSO appeared, it is mainly because the growth of international business in this search advertising market, competition is getting awful that some of its powerful customers are testing the paid search model, and they request longer payment terms. For example, Google acquired Motorola and expect to make money off the patents in the way of exciting hardware. Also, Google+ is relatively unprofitable and potentially will be a cash cow, although Google+ is used as a defensive weapon to Facebook and other social networking business. The Growing Problem of Music Piracy    At the turn of the millenium, the music industry has been faced with an unforeseen phenomenon that has affected its very foundation - mass scale music piracy. The decline of CD sales in the past three years have been blamed on the availability of songs that can be downloaded from Internet sites and service providers like Napster, KaZaA and Morpheus free of charge. Today the issue of intellectual copyright infringement in music has been taken more seriously than ever before, as large record labels and companies like Sony and EMI struggle to maintain healthy album sales in the face of online music piracy. In addition, music piracy affects more than just the corporate world - it affects the very artists who create music and receive no compensation for their efforts. In fact ?many high-profile and buzz artists, including Eminem, Oasis and most recently 50 Cent, have seen their upcoming albums undercut by file-sharing online before their scheduled releases, prompting record labels to move up street dates to avoid losing album sales.?
